Our meals are prepared to meet the State of Maine and federal guidelines as set by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and the State Dept. of Education. Meals meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances for school-aged children.
We are happy to offer fresh fruit and veggies at some of our RSU 4 schools. Students in grades K-8 are eligible to participate in the "Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)." The FFVP provides fresh fruit and vegetable samples for students to try during the day multiple times per week.
Potential Benefits:
Expand the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience
Increase children's fruit and vegetable consumption
Make a different in children's diets to impact their present and future health
The program is seen as an important catalyst for change in efforts to combat childhood obesity by helping children learn more healthy eating habits. The FFVP introduces school children to a variety of produce that they would otherwise might not have had the opportunity to sample.
