June 30, 2023
Dear Parents and Staff of RSU 4 and the Residents of Litchfield, Sabattus and Wales,
At the heart of this year’s budget development was the acknowledgement that it is important to
have a school budget that provides a high quality education and is also fiscally responsible.
Since the failed School Budget Referendum on June 13, 2023, the District’s Administration team has been working hard in collaboration with the Board of Directors to identify lines in the budget to reduce the overall cost in order to reduce the impact on local taxes. The Board met June 28, 2023 for over two hours to discuss Administration’s proposed reductions recognizing that reducing a budget is not an easy task. You will see below the list of agreed upon reductions and most of the items reduced were priority 1 items, which are items with the least amount of impact on the education of our students. The priority 2 items on the list are items that may have an impact on students, however, the district will be able to continue to meet the needs of students.
The Board agreed to move forward with the agreed upon $368,758.26 reduction for the
2023-2024 School Budget based on the identified items. The Board is scheduled to approve a
revised budget during the July 12, 2023 School Board meeting. If approved, the revised budget
will be $22,084,406.56. The revised school budget will need to be approved by the attending
residents of the three towns at the Budget Public meeting on July 27, 2023 at Oak Hill High
School at 6:30 PM. The final step is the School Budget Referendum vote on August 15, 2023.
