Memo: Transportation Updates

To: RSU #4 Families

From: Katy Grondin, Superintendent

Transportation Updates:

● The District is on the verge of having all 10 full-time Bus Driver positions filled. The District now has One position open, however, the District will hire two drivers, one driver will support the need for coverage for absences.

○ New Driver has been hired and will start on February 1, 2024. This will mean Green bus will have a driver until Clif returns from his leave of absence. When Clif returns, a decision will be made as to the reassignment of the new bus driver based on the highest need.

○ 2 candidates are currently working with our drivers to complete their Behind the Wheel training before taking their driving test.

■ Training costs to the candidates will be reimbursed.

■ RSU 4 drivers are being paid to train those in training.

● One RSU #4 teacher has completed the first part of bus driver training towards attaining their bus driver license in order to drive a bus for their program field trips and after school trips.

● Two SAD 75 drivers continue to drive Pre-K runs. An RSU #4 Coach drives the Lewiston Regional Technical Center run part-time.

● One MSAD 11 driver will be periodically available to do trips in the evening and weekends.

● Drivers in collaboration with the Trip Coordinator and Director of Operations have been adjusting runs in order to provide transfers between buildings and to drop off and pick up students when feasible when there is a driver absence.

● Vans can only be used for middle and high school age students not recommended for regular bus stop routes by the DOE or covered by insurance. Vans are being used for Alternative programs, athletic events and transfers when needed.

● Former drivers and other recommendations have been follow-up to try to secure substitute drivers. Applicants, so far, are interested in full-time positions. Having a substitute driver pool is a goal for supporting driver absences.

● Staffing agencies, social media, posters, signs and job posting options have been utilized to attract new applicants for positions.

● Bus charter services such as Hudson, First Student, Cyr, and Northeast were contacted and only Northeast Charter was available to provide services. The cost was not sustainable as a long term solution.

● Addressing the transportation needs is a top priority in the district’s daily operations.

Thank you to all our families for stepping in to provide transportation when needed! We appreciate your support and understanding. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Director of Operations (Maintenance, Facilities, Transportation and Emergency Management), Jonathan Varney, jonathan.varney@rsu4.org.
